While training for and completing a half-marathon last April, I injured a tendon in my ankle. It took 3 doctors and 7 months before I got on the treatment plan that I've been on the past several weeks. It involved a cast, and now I've transitioned into a walking boot. Even though I've got 3 months of physical therapy in front of me, the light at the end of the very-little-activity tunnel is finally appearing!Perhaps it's too early for me to get anxious about the possibility of of walking or jogging without pain again, but I found this article over at Runners World from Coach Jenny Hadfield about tricks for returning to running after an injury.
I really enjoyed this advice. It's pertinent to everyone looking to take fear head-on, not just with an injury:
The greatest way to tackle fear is to break it into smaller, digestible pieces. What seems like an overwhelming risk will be much more achievable if you're looking only at the very first step. And once you take the first step, you'll gain the momentum to take the next step, and so on. Eat the elephant one bite at a time and soon the fear will go by the wayside.Have you bounced back from an injury? What tips can you share?
